DEW A (5/6th) Fri 10-12 pm
DEW B (6-8th) Sun 10-12pm
DEW C (8th and up) Sat 4-6 pm

This class will teach the fundamentals of academic writing, with a focus on the two most common writing tasks assigned to students: persuasive and analytical essays. Students will learn to identify themes and subtext, analyze characters and discuss their relationships & goals. They will practice commenting on literary devices such as symbolism, metaphor, allegory, irony, and satire/social commentary.

The class will also explore tone, voice, and mood, considering how writers make
choices about how to express their ideas, and how these choices affect the way
readers understand their work. Instruction will include detailed guidance about how to follow the most effective essay structures, how to cite sources/quote source material properly & avoid plagiarism (per MLA style), and the writing process (brainstorming, developing a thesis, outlining, drafting, proofreading, & giving meaningful peer feedback). These goals will be met through lively discussion, frequent in-class writing assignments, weekly homework & reading stories, poems and essays by literary greats both old and new, from Shakespeare and Dickinson to recent Pulitzer Prize winners Jhumpa Lahiri and Colson Whitehead.

Python I: Introduction to Programming

 6/20-8/12 (8wks) Schedule: TBD

This class is for younger students who do not have any background in computer science and are interested in exploring the subject. Students will use Python to explore fundamental concepts in programming as well as learn creative problem-solving techniques. They will have the opportunity to put together everything they learned over the summer by programming the classic board game Battleship. Students should expect to be familiar with programming ideas by the time they finish the class but will need more instruction until they can code their own projects from beginning to end. Students who are interested in non-technical subdisciplines within computer science such as graphic design and web development should take this class.

Python II: Introduction to Competitive Programming

 6/20-8/12 (8wks) Schedule: TBD

This class is for students without any background in computer science that are interested in learning programming in a more technical context. The class will be fast-paced, and although conceptual knowledge will be thoroughly covered, problem-solving techniques, algorithms, and efficiency analysis make up the core of the class. The first part of the class will cover basic ideas and algorithms for data types such as strings, lists and dictionaries. After students have had sufficient practice, they will work on problems from past USACO (United States of America Computing Olympiad) contests. Prior experience is not necessary, but a solid mathematical foundation is critical in understanding efficiency of algorithms.
